You wouldnt need that ring if the hackle was tied in properly.

why do people not add a list of materials used when doing these? that would be a huge help.

Always enjoy watching your fly tying videos. Nice looking fly–that red should make it very attractive to the trout. I've found using a small ring to hold the hackles forward a great tip that I haven't seen anywhere else.
