My father used to tell me about making his own fishing rods from bamboo with a bit of fishing line tied to the end . . . I wanted to do the same but upgrade the simple design to be more modern. So I made my own fishing rod from bamboo and old fishing pole spares.

Damn I like this was cool. I run a non profit kids fishing group I'm wanting to make different or odd or just why things. Love the idea. Thanks sir. God bless o and happy Thanksgiving.
Would you ever sell one bud I've been looking for something like this forever actually just bought one from Walmart but dosent have a reel
Awesome rod enjoyable.fishing recommend Caught five 18" cutthroat trout on it the first day I used it and my buddy caught a 22" the same day. Great action and should last a long time.
I've got an old 9 footer b&m pole. Wondering how that might do. Pardon me if I didn't catch it, How long was that fresh stick you used?
I'd put the nail polish on first and then the thread,……but I'd use wood glue under and on the thread.
You could have attached the eyelets with hot melt glue.
But I would have cut it,… carefully cut the limbs off leaving nubs,……the file the nubs down to the ribs then put it on a 2X4 and put nails down the side to hold it as straight as I could and wrap some string around for a controlled dry out side but not directly in the sun.
After it dried I'd build a fire and heat the parts that need straightened over coals then bend it straight.
In my bed room I just use a candle,……but the bamboo I can find is only 7/16 of an inch.
Then I'd sand it and wipe it down with linseed oil to seal it.
Then eyelets and a reel.
For eyelets I'd hot melt glue them in place and coat the area with wood glue and wrap it with black kite string and at the end cover it with wood glue.
Reel attachment can be done with zip ties or hose clamps.
The reason you cut off the limbs and sand down the nubs is so you don't compromise the strength of the joints.
If you want a stronger pole use a sapling.
But same thing let it dry then straighten it.
I live on the Atlantic Ocean and just got some bamboo from my father in-law, we fish daily and I’m trying to build a few rods, Great video!

Love this rig! ur2.pl/2318 I hadn't fished in years, but I walk along the James River on my way home from work and wanted to see if perhaps maybe I could catch dinner along the way some nights. This setup easily fits into my backpack. Yesterday, was Day Two. I struck out on Day One, but wasn't surprised, given that the James is in flood right now.
Great video, what was the glue you used please I’m going to have a go at making the rod. Many thanks. Ray
My uncle used to take us fishing with cane poles when we were kids, about 60 years ago! You could buy them at the hardware store for about 50 cents. They didn't have guides, though. If you want to make a bamboo pole with no guides, tie your string about 2 to 3 feet back from the narrow end, then wrap the line around the pole about 6 times as you draw it to the end of the pole. Then wrap it around the end 3 or 4 times, and tie it again. Uncle Joe said this helped keep the tip from breaking when you had a fish on. He also taught us to measure the line from where it's tied on the tip down to the fat end of the pole, and cut it there. No need to have it any longer than the pole itself since you're not casting. Tie on a hook, fasten a red & white cork float, and dig a few worms. Or roll some bread dough balls, with the soft interior of a slice of white bread – it's surprising how long they actually stay on the hook! Another favorite bait was a slice of hot dog cut in half. Thanks so much for prompting my fond memories of an old uncle, long gone. Bless you!!
This looks like a fun project I got a question for you if you would do it again would you have waited for the bamboo to dry completely and then do all the gluing was there any shrinkage when the bamboo dried and you had to re-glue things?
Here are a few more D.I.Y. FISHING ROD EYES. I USE THEM FOR MY NEW, COMBO SPORT : BUSH FISHING & STREET GOLF. ( IN PLETT = PLETTENBERG BAY, SOUTH AFRICA ) https://t.co/Eagi2XWXe2
