A big shout out to Peter from Watsonville for correcting some mistakes in this video! 1) It is totally okay to use distilled water. I was wrong. So, if you don't have an RO/DI filter and/or don't live near a local fish store that can sell you water, no problem, go to the grocery store and buy distilled water and make saltwater yourself. 2) 33-35 ppt, not ppm. I always say parts per million, but yes, when talking about salt, it is parts per thousand. A big thanks to everyone who has watched this video over 350,000 times!

I unfortunately stopped my interests in reefing but just came back into it.the thing is,I live in a country where reefing isn’t common and pet shops or aquarium shops aren’t that common, but I just watched this video again and I realized that I commented on this video two years ago.I forgot everything I learnt and I am on my way to learning everything I knew.I wish my knowledge on this hobby expands so that one day I might be able to start my first saltwater tank

In 1983 actually used tap water in a 55 gallon salt tank. The method of filtration was a metal one that was made in the 1960s. I had a underground filter with two power heads. That was it . I had a regular fresh water hood with one light bulb. I had Tangs, Damsel fish and clown fish The tank had 20 fish ranging from 1 to 4 inches in length. Believe it or not the fish lived. My only explanation from getting away without the tank crashing was tap water over 35 years ago was less of a toxic threat to both fresh and salt fish. I also think I happen to be lucky.

That was helpful. I realized right away we won’t be able to do this with our small solar system

Now try to keep a marine tank stable. Believe it or not it is very difficult to maintain a saltwater fish tank. Fish in the ocean can shit all they want, but in a closed system like a fish tank, you better have deep pockets of lots of money!! It is a completely ball game than a fresh water fish aquarium.

could you pic up water directly from the ocean?

Reply

Sadly, not for me. The set up is too long and too complex for my taste. Ill stick with terrariums..

I’ve used distilled water and it worked great. It would be too much work picking up the bottles for a larger tank, but for a small tank 20-25 gallons it might be a good option for those who don’t want to get an RO/DI unit. It worked for me.

hey! I've got a quick question for you! So we are starting our saltwater tank soon and we bought the tank stand and its about 4 ish inches off the ground because of the legs of the stand. Underneath the stand is an air vent, so I was wondering, even though the air vent isn't touching the stand, is it still safe for my fish? thanks!
