IS IT WORTH IT?! | A Review of Fishing North Atlantic: Scallops DLC in About 3 Minutes!

A detailed review of the Scallops DLC for Fishing North Atlantic in 3 minutes! Check out our review of the base game https://youtu.be/ZOKHT3lUVsQ

Scallops! All I really know about Scallops is that Gordan Ramsay really hates it when they’re undercooked, but now you can catch them for yourself thanks to a new DLC for Fishing North Atlantic that came out a few days ago.

It includes 3 new ships and a new fishing mechanic to accommodate the new technique needed to catch the glorious little meat filled sea shells we call scallops.

The way you fish for scallops is pretty simple. Basically you lower 1 or 2 nets all the way down to the ocean floor with the help of a crane and then try to keep your speed between 2 to 7km/h while dragging the nets along the sea bed until they’re full, at which point you haul them back on deck, flip ‘em upside down and start sorting the big shells from the small.

Small shells are thrown back into the ocean while the big ones get pried open with a knife to get to the valuable and edible muscles inside. Much like all the other types of fishing in the base game you can either do all this stuff yourself or assign crew members to do it for you.

Opening the scallops manually feels a little bit clunky and unintuitive, atleast until you grasp what kind of motion it actually wants you to do to get the best result, but once I got used to it didn’t feel too bad and I usually ended up putting a crew member on the job anyway to save having to get up from the captains chair and run up and down stairs all day.

The 3 new ships include the Old Ben which, as the name suggests, is an old wooden boat with a much more hands on crane that involves having to rotate and reel the mast manually. Then there’s the Ocean Scout which is a more modern, mid-range dredger with automatic line reeling and a remote console to operate the crane.

Finally there’s the Viking Power which is a high end ship that comes with all the modern amenities. All 3 ships can be bought and customized and you can upgrade things like the engine, autopilot and storage space to increase their overall efficiency.

The scallops themselves are worth a fortune aswell with a fully loaded ship usually bringing in millions of dollars per trip.

Now I know I said I wasn’t going to talk about the base game but it’s difficult to review the DLC without mentioning the overwhelming amount of bugs in the game ranging from minor glitches such as scallop nets freaking out every time you pick them up and crew members suffering from pattern baldness, all the way to game crashes and random fps drops, and it’s disappointing to see a lot of the same bugs still present in the game that we mentioned in our original review over 5 months ago.

You can pick up the DLC for 11.99 euros on Steam which is quite steep for the small amount of content that you get. Add to it the amount of bugs and the overall ugly aesthetic and general jankiness of the game as a whole and it all just feels abit lacklustre and disappointing. Overall it’s not something we recommend buying unless you can get it on sale or you’re an avid fan of the game with a special love for scallops that goes beyond watching the odd episode of Hell’s Kitchen.

The DLC is a lot of fun, but with the DLC they introduced a whole lot of gamebreaking bugs and they lack behind fixing them. I love the game but it is so frustrating, that the devs are not focusing on fixing bugs first. Yes they are a pretty small team, but come on….
