Elegantly simple. Nothing there that doesn't need to be.

Found one of these in a bin of reels I bought last summer. Didn't know it was rare. It was first one serviced and first one I had to try out. Never used a reel without a bail, took a little getting used to.

Wow. I wish all reels were that simple and easy to service. I have a 710 Grennie that I should dig out and give a second chance to. Thanks Dennis.

What an absolute cracker Dennis and your quality work on the service did it justice.
Wish I could find more of these older Penn fixed spool (spinning) reels in the UK but I just have the one, a 706 which is a shelf sitter rather than one that goes fishing.
Keep up the great work and best wishes from England
Stuart

It is not a 704 but rather a 706 Penn Greenie. It is one of the most difficult reels to collect because of how rare it is and the expense when you find them. I knew immediately what it was by the handle and the line pickup. Only the 706 had that handle. This reel is the predecessor of the Penn 706Z which you have done a video on as I was having problems with the line roller. Only the 706Z also came with a black and gold “pancake” or “coffee grinder” handle. I would love to find one of these but price is usually a problem. The AR dog on these greenies are notorious for pooping out. I’ve had it happen numerous times as I have serviced my 700 and 704 greenies. I actually own a rare forest green 704 that I converted to bail-less or PUM with a conversion kit. I even think Penn may have made the conversion kit. I got a 704 greenie without the bail in that way. You have such infernal luck removing those pinion and ball bearings. I know how to get the stuck ones out but it does take some effort as well as taking some chances that some would not think advisable. I got a very nice little tool from Gomexus for testing as well as measuring the inside diameter of ball bearings. It’s not expensive and is quite helpful. Anyone interested in that tool can contact Gomexus through their eBay website. You’ll never see nicer gears in a reel than those found in these Penn greenies and Z reels. Of all the reels I’ve collected my Penn greeniies were among the first. You could find much better bargains on these highly collectible reels back in 2018 than now. I did get a very nice 704 Greenie with the medallion side plate recently but it was twice what my first one cost. It is a testament to the longevity of these Penn greenies that there are so many still around. The only thing hurting the value of this 706 is the missing medallion. I still fish with my greenies and will continue to use them as long as I can stil fish! Great video Dennis!

Sure that isn't a 706? Great reel, I have a dozen or so.
