What year was the 420ssg released?? Found a new old stock 1 and love the way it looks.
Many many sharks landed on my 950 and it’s still going strong , want a new model but don’t yet have a reason to upgrade 🤷🏻♂️
James, apologies for the missing part. If you could contact our customer service team they'll be able to get the missing part in the mail to you asap. Their phone number is (800) 892-5444, phone lines are open M-F from 8am to 6pm. Thanks for fishing PENN, James, and again our apologies for the mistake.
I have caught 30+ inch redfish on my Penn 550ssg and 7 ft., 2 piece Ugly Stick. It is a great combo for surf and boat fishing and fits easily in my car. My only complaint is the 550 auto bail has never worked. I ordered the rotor repair kit and opened the reel only to find an original part, the lever, was missing from the factory. I have fished for years with manual bail.
You can use the rod you have but it all depends on what you are doing with the set up. If you are throwing small live baits and looking for distance you will need to move up to a 7 or 7'6". If you are fishing dead baits the 6'6" will work just fine.
Hi. Thanks for the question. Yes, the 6500SSV is rated for 280 yards of #50 braid. The 10500SSV is rated for 580 yards of #80 braid. This reel is extremely durable and can handle just about anything you throw at it. We appreciate your support.
Hi. Thanks for your question. It depends on if you are going to be fishing live bait or artificials. If your deep dropping with live bait you want a rod that has a softer tip, whereas with artificials you want a faster tip. For live bait, the Legion inshore rod 6'9" Fast, Light rod with a Spinfisher V 4500LL would be a great set-up. For artificials, a Legion 7'0" Medium #10-17 rod with a Spinfisher V 4500 would be the ticket. We appreciate your support.
@sk8metalnick6 We are sorry to hear that one has given you such problems. Please feel free to email your contact (phone and email) information to the contact form on PENN Reels Dot Com and someone from our service team will reach out to you.
i have the original american SS reels, a 7500 and 8500. the 8500 is around 12-14 years old and i only replaced the parts last year for the first time. it still worked fabulously for all those years of being submerged in salt water and not cleaning or lubricating anything. i now take better care of the reels to ensure peak performance. however the 7500 is about 10 years old and had numerous problems over the years, including anti reverse, bearing and clicker malfunction, and snapping screws. ???
@borgey420 Love it. I'm currently at the beach, and just got back from using it on my 11ft surf rod. We've hooked into some large rays again (getting annoying for sure) among other fish and the drag is so smooth. I love the sound the 8000 series makes when the bail closes- it sounds like cocking a pump-action shotgun! hahaha
@risenflame How do you like your Battle? I just ordered one to go onto a 7 FT Ugly Stick Tiger Rod. It seems pretty damn solid
Love my 550SSg reel matched with a 10ft Tsunami surf rod. A very very light setup that can do everything: bucktails, plugs, shrimp, chunks, etc. It has been great season after season, despite the abuse I give it. I love it, great for the price. Largest fish was a 50lb+ stingray- despite taking nearly 200 yards of drag continuously, and the reel becoming very hot, the drag never got sticky or let up. This reel has been so fantastic, I purchased a Sargus and Battle reel for other applications
