The Deepest Living Fish on Earth

The world’s deepest fish may not be what you’re expecting: not a Megalodon, not a gigantic sea monster of legend, but a small and robust creature that is one of the ocean’s ultimate survivors: the snailfish, family Liparidae.

i knew it wasn't going to be a racist megalodon or gigantic sea monster of legend (product of toxic masculinity). so glad that small and robust creature is not being oppressed by disgusting, islamaphobic human beings.

Curious how the snailfish breaks common conventions of deepsea creatures that doesnt use much energy and are ambush hunters

The belief that humans won't impact them is 100% wrong. Global warming and the trash that floats down (fishing nets, trawling equipment, etc) especially the micro plastics from above that broke down after years of floating in the ocean will eventually trickle down and affect them… ๐Ÿค”

They look like oversized tadpoles. Looking up at all the sharks and dangerous hunting fish. Laughing and saying, come down here if you think you're so tough.

What simply amazes me is how these animals are able to survive in an environment with possibly hundreds of pounds of pressure per inch.

You're this little dude. Cruising along. Having a pretty average day. Day as well you understand it anyway since there's like to light down there at all.

Suddenly this big freaking robot thing shows up and shines a light in your eyes like a cop that just caught you sleeping in your car in a McDonald's parking lot.

With the rate at which we are destroying the oceans it won't be long before these creatures feel the impact of humanity. As sad as that makes me I fear it's true.

It is beleived that the deepest living fish might actually be a cuskeel of the species Abyssobrotula galatheae

One was caught from a trawl in the puerto rico trench at a depth of 8370 meters, which would make it deeper than any snailfish recorded

Though, this has been contested as some claim the specimen was caught with a non closing net and therefore may have come from a shallower depth

Maybe a stupid question, but if you brought that fish to the surface would it have the same reaction as a human, i.e. the bends?

I wish your last slide were true. Everyone who cares about deep sea species needs to be aware of the news that Norway is poised to begin deep sea mining, and other countries may follow suit with unknown consequences for animals like this one that we know very little about. Public opposition needs to be strong.
