The other day I was prepping for my upcoming surf fishing trip and ran into a bit of a problem…
I was going to be targeting pompano, but none of the stores had floats.
My trip was the next day, so instead of ordering them online and waiting a few days for them to come in, I decided to take matters into my own hands and make my own floats.
The floats I made looked just like the store-bought ones but were a fraction of the cost.
In this video, I’m going to show you how to make your own floats, plus I’ll show you two other surf fishing rig hacks that will save you time and money.
I’ve been testing a bunch of different tricks like these and the three in this video are my favorite.
If you like to go surf fishing, you’re going to love this video.
Have any questions about these hacks?
Do you have any other hacks you like to use?

Nice video. I gave up on the flip flop because it was about impossible to drill an adequate hole through the float.
When I saw the flip-flops in the thumbnail I thought “what a great idea, that will make walking in the surf so much easier “. Still going to try it.
When you make your float out of that flip flop what do you use to put a hole so it to put your line through
How do you punch the hole thru to be able to push a doubled line thru, yet the cork still be tight on the line? That is the most difficult part.
how did u put the flip flop float on the rig?…did u drill a hole or make a slit??????
Haha thanks for making this video. I had a fun time making the floats out of the Sandals!
Thank you for some ideas, I stop buying store rigs years ago… i use shack bags.
I've been using my old disposable foam earplugs from work as floats in freshwater. Work great.
One thing I do to prevent the rigs from tangling is once folded I ise a little piece of painters tape. It comes off easy and clean
Fantastic work. Would you share your video, lighting, and sound setup? It's great!
good video like th plug maker.I use the slipper to hold rigs ct slits by the toe and heel. stab hooks into the sides of slipper. holds 2 sabiki rigs and 2 or 3 dorado rigs. no tangles. … I make bottom fishing and sabiki rigs sameway exept you put the hook on backwards .aways put the line from the inside of the hook. works better that way cause it curls around the jaw thats why most hooks are pointed to the eye of the hook . that why circle hooks work without setting the hook . also the slipper rig is washdown able and floats . no scared um go get um.
You could also use a 30 caliber (or similar) brass rifle casing…fired and empty, of course..and do the same thing. That's how I make mine. And if you are into fly tying, the little flip flop floats make great popper bodies for bluegills.
Great idea on the floats, you can take a file and sharpen the edges and it will cut even better. If you do that you'll need to do it over wood so it doesnt dull as quickly.
Nice tip I was actually thinking recently what I could make those floats with. This is a great idea!
Great video man thanks for sharing. However you didn’t show how you put the line through the hole in the sandal lol float you made? Assuming you a small object such as a toothpick or something and you punch it through to make a small hole so you can put the line through?
