If you put some activated carbon in filter it will make water not smell and water clearer.

What size glass jars would you recommend for a 20 gallon long that is divided into 4-5 sections?

How does the dyi betta compare to a traditional sponge filter for mechanical filtration? I currently use a sponge filter in my betta tank and feel it doesn't do the best with mechanical filtration.

Hi great video! Will this work in a 2gallon tank? Or is too strong.

How can you go 6 to 10 wks without water changes ? I've got a large filter what does 2000 litres and I still have to do regular water changes. NO WONDER YOUR WATER IS SO DIRTY. Not to mention ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates will be sky high.

Will 100% polyster fiber work in place of the plolyfill? Please someone answer soon. Thank you!

For those making these and cannot find the tubing, a turkey baster works great, the ones that flex a little (softer plastic) are easier to cut, not the ridged plastic. Sunbeam brand. You can cut it with a steak knife and drill holes around one end.

I made this but the air stone keeps floating up and doesn't stay at the bottom of the tube, does it have to touch the bottom in order for it to work properly? If so, what do you suggest I do to help it stay anchored to the bottom?

I really like this method of using the jar. I could essentially bury most of it for aesthetic purposes. I will probably try this because I'm a canner and have hundreds of jars of all sizes!

Do I really need an air stone? Can’t the tube be bare?

Hi! I'm planning on using this in my soon-to-be betta tank. Will a thicker plastic bottle work for this?

Actually, I think the DIY filter is better than the store bought sponge filter. As well, it would be easy enough to use a larger jar and stronger air pump, if your aquarium needed it.

Great video! If you make the tube in the middle twice the length to the height of the bottle, it'll be more effective.

Very thorough! My daughter received a beta as a gift and we have been researching how to create a cozy environment for it. Your videos have been so easy to follow – Really cleared up a lot of questions we were having during our research. Thank you!!! Happy holiday's 🙂

hi, i made this, but I feel as if it's not working well… it seems to barely filter, nothing at ALL is getting sucked in, even small particles, I tried testing the suction by putting a piece of duckweed to see if it'll hold… but it was to no avail, I set it up EXACTLY how it was here, and the other video.

This is wonderful! I have a lot of betas and I’ve been looking for a good filter for them with a lower flow then the in I have. Little suggestion tho I would add a layer of activated carbon to the filter medium. You have great mechanical and bio filtration but no chemical filtration. It’s not Necessarily needed. Your tanks are proof of that. But it still helps a bit. 😀

Hi Sheila, would it be okay to replace the polyester fibers with cotton? The regular make-up remover type of cotton, not pre-moistened with any make-up remover of course, and even organic. Polyester stuffing is sold in giant bags here and i really don't want to have more craft supplies lying around for years if I only need a pinch of it. Thanks!

How would a pint size glass do for one of these? For either a 10 gallon or 20long? The pints are generally the size jars I keep on hand. Thank you for this video!

Neat DIY project! Have you ever mixed the regular stone with lava rock or a medium such as Seachem Matrix? You'd get better bio filtration than with smooth stones. And are those small mason jars you were using?
