How to make a Hook Keeper for a Fishing Rod in seconds

I have a pet peeve with fishing rods that do not include a hook keeper since I hate putting my hook on one of the spokes of a line guide. Here’s how to make a great hook keeper for a few pennies instead of paying $4 for a SINGLE Fuji EZ Keeper.!

The Kayak Hacks Fishing channel covers kayak, wading, shoreline, spin and fly fishing. It features interesting gear mods to make kayak fishing more comfortable, efficient and enjoyable. In addition, I share many tips, tricks and “how tos” for more effective spin and fly fishing regardless of whether you are fishing from a boat or on your feet. Please subscribe! Thanks!

It goes without saying that fishing is dangerous as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other hazards that occur at random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide, before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. In addition, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade.

The bottom line is that you must make your own judgment in terms of acceptable behavior and risk and not rely on the opinions expressed here. Great idea. I found an old Ugly Stick in my father's garage. It had never been used! I like it.

You can also use a paper clip

1. Ugly sticks are not good rods.
2. Put the hook under reel seat

Another option are using zip ties that come with eyelets made into the end of the zip tie. Not only are these style of zip ties great hook keepers to add to rods, they can serve many uses in combination with small bungee cords used for securing items.I add them to all rods for securing the rods in rod holders on my kayak crate. Need to add an attachment point to your kayak for accessories – try combining these zip ties and small (smaller than 550 cord)  bungees and you will find the uses are limitless for all of us kayak hacks.
