Don’t trash the ceramic rings on your fishing rod line guides by using them as a hook keeper. Instead, use this very inexpensive one-step fishing tip to create a hook keeper on any rod. Hat’s off to J. Bevis for telling me about this very innovative way to use a cable tie… and we all love cable ties!

It goes without saying that fishing is dangerous as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other hazards that occur at random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide, before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. In addition, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade.

I just put these on 2 of my rods that lacked hook keepers. Due to the taper of the rod blank, I superglued them to their rod. Great idea that works terrific! Thanks!
I already had the zip ties and super glue so this hack didn’t cost me anything.
I also use two small cable ties. Make a small loop with one, and use the other to loop through and wrap around the rod.
Pay $5 for a pack of special cable ties, and only use one? No economical sense. Just put a split ring into a normal cable tie and attach it to your rod. Done.
I found your channel today. After watching about 30 of you videos, I must say that I am absolutely enjoying these videos. I will be buying a pack of these cable ties today. Thanks for entertaining and informative videos. I especially liked your bobby pin video also. I have always just used a very much lighter "leader" .
ahh someone beat me to tell you this idea lol. i had been wanting to mention it but i really don't youtube much anymore. oh well! glad someone else brought it up. its a great idea. i've used those same cable ties for sliding weights. they don't fray you line like a bare weight would.
That was one of the coolest ideas I have seen in a long time. Works great and have plenty left. Anybody need some?
Of course you can use them as zip ties too.
Thanks so much.
Mike
Great idea!!!
Wil work great. No need to glue it…just put it tight.
Thanks!
I looked to see if you had a Google+ link so YouTube subscribers could see any new videos or postings on their own Google+ pages – just a thought if you haven't created one and share to both YT and Google+. I have to remember to check YT every Wed and Sunday. I posted on my Google+ page a link of kayak hacking ideas used for my yak rigging. Would be neat to see more subs sending pics and ideas to share through you channel. https://plus.google.com/103167045279478474336/posts/DoNMgw1Svai BTW I just use a small dab of super glue around the base of the zip tie to ensure it doesn't slide up or around.
I would think the zip tie would keep sliding up the rod since it's not the same diameter all the way through. Unless you glue it or something. I wouldn't buy a Rod unless it had one built in anyway. I supposed if you broke it off you would want something. Unless you just use the last eyelet as a hook keeper.
