How to make the one device that could save you a lot of money while fishing from a bridge, boat, pier or dock. It’s a homemade leash that keeps your fishing rod and reel from going over the bridge when a big fish pulls and you aren’t holding your fishing pole. With some creative thinking I’m sure you can imagine endless ways of using this rod and reel securing rope. I actually got the idea from some subscribers who watched a video of me securing my fishing rod by wedging it in the handle of a five gallon bait bucket. They were saying that I should make a leash out of paracord and carabiner clips to wrap around the rod and reel and also the bridge piling.
Here are some other ways this fishing pole holder can be used:
-As a line for securing a bait bucket while wade, boat, or shore fishing
-It will work as a pet leash
-If you have a big fish that you need to drag, wrap the rod and reel securing cord around the fish and use it to drag your catch
There are a lot of different uses in a sportsman’s world for this paracord rope with carabiner clips fishing rod leash. At the end of the video I’ve asked viewers to have a little fun with me and let’s brainstorm about some different things this homemade device can be used for.

Attach to a life jacket or floating device, maybe with a longer rope to toss to someone in need,
back in the good old days, we'd just tie the rod to the object with some string
Cool Idea might have to try this for something else I've been going down the rabbit hole looking for a rod holder that would go into the ground and still pack away in a backpack or a tackle box everything I've found is either made from heavy metal and extremely long and won't pack away easily do you have any ideas I've been trying to think of a away to make something but nothing is coming to me
Ever been on a bass boat that has a 200HP or larger motor? My friend has to wear a motorcycle helmet to keep his head and eyes from getting blown off. Those cords would be perfect for your tackle bag or box from getting blown off into the lake. I will secure the cord around the rear swivel seat's pedestal and my tackle bag's straps or handles. There's nothing more worse than that sinking feeling, OMG… where did my fishing stuff go? 😭
I use one as a paddle leash on my kayak, one end tied to the paddle, the other to a carabiner. Also as a tow rope to pull kids on kayaks, float tubes, etc. Can be used as a tie off if you beach your kayak to make sure it doesn't drift away, and to attach an anchor to a cleat.
If u can learn a cats claw u can learn a cinch with a slip knot…no carabiners to deal with…faster to remove ,adjustable to anything and cheaper …
I've done some of this. I suggest tie a small loop knot piece on the rod itself, for the carbiner to attach to. This way it should also be fast to detach when you want during fish-on events.
I've been using something like this for years man. And I will say they do help a 33 " red took off with mine last summer and and if I did not have my leader on my rod I would have lost it.. It was on the 61st street pier. And I have been making them and selling them and fishing lures for a wile now.
I use two strong zip ties to attach a key ring to the rod itself just ahead of the front grip. That's where I hook the leash carabiner. It can quickly be detached to fight a fish and doesn't interfere with reeling.
Wish you hadn't posted this video☺. Caught a St.Croix fishing rod off the pier a couple of weeks ago that someone lost by not having it tied down. Hoping to snag another one just that I just saw went over last week. By the way I will return it to the owner of I see him fishing again.
what do we win for the best idea? wrap a tarp up with it then use it as a tent cord. Pull{clip it on ur belt} ur little red wagon. make{a small tree or branch} a trip snare….
Thanks for the vid. "TIP" go to walmart tools 50 feet {paracord} blaze orange $3.94. They have other colors types and sizes.{only get 16 feet at craft store for $2.50}
A few weeks ago I was fishing at a one of my local spots and a gentleman used bungee cord he leaned the rod up against the rail and then wrapped a bunch of quarter around it around one of the posts so that he wouldn't lose his rod
Another way to attach this carabiner to rod, would be to make a loop of paracord on your rod to attach the carabiner too. Mabe using the joint where the real attaches to the rod as an anchor point.
I have a tent stake and a length of trot line I use to secure my rod when shore fishing . Fits right in my tackle box .
Kayaking you could use it as a tow rope if you have to wade anywhere. You could use it to assist with standing up in the kayak.
Wrap it around your reel seat a few times, and attach the clips to fighting harness, easy
Up in Canada when we ice fish we use the rope trick too tie the rod too your shelter so we don't lose it down the hole when the fish hits your bait
I made something like this a few years ago but more elaborate. Can actually hook it up to trees and stuff within 30 feet of the water. Saved me from having a few lost rods.
Looks great. The yellow color is perfect for night fishing. Maybe add salt water resistant carabiners if you have to deal with rain and sea water.
